Millpond Ink Musing, 2015 – Of Reflections, Part 3

I am not ordinarily given to speculation; which I don’t think that Part 3 represents, but others may dispute. Nonetheless, I believe that Lucifer’s duty to reflect God’s glory back upon God (Part 1) included reflecting the glory of God’s creation of the heavens and the earth prior to Adam’s fall. One could imagine that the beauty and majesty of what God called good in the creation was too much for Lucifer to handle, and perhaps, besides becoming prideful while basking in God’s eternal light, his desire for ownership of this world pushed him over the edge. He became, besides everything else, covetous.

Now, these latter statements may be speculative, but not improbable in imagining. I could not envision beholding God as a creature without Christ’s blood, and certainly not, in my filthy rags.

Nonetheless, we need only to consider man’s behavior in view of who Lucifer is and his actions. If it is said that Lucifer is the father of lies, then it is well true that he is the father of pride, greed, lust and so on. Men are no different in that, before Christ, we followed his lead. As Lucifer, we desire to possess what isn’t ours and many will go far in securing personal glory. So, if we can accept this hypothesis as reasonable, I would go so far as to say that Lucifer’s fall from heaven and his temptation of Eve was probably immediate; if not simultaneous in occurrence. It wasn’t necessarily impulsive. No, basking in God’s majesty and light for all of those ages? To me, it was cumulative and then the breaking point came: he coveted what God created here. He became the strong man who would keep His goods at peace. That is, before a child was born in Bethlehem.

Of course, you might say, ‘Okay, I’ll bite (no pun intended) but why didn’t God just pull the plug so that Lucifer couldn’t do anything?’ Well, first, there is the immutability of God’s Word. He changes not. Once His will is set, it is done, and authority was conveyed to Lucifer as the prince of the power of the air. God would not rescind that station. Of course, there is no question that Lucifer couldn’t continue as a reflection of God’s glory after he sinned; no more than God could set aside our sin. The difference is, God made no provision for a demonstration of His mercy to the fallen angels. There was no mediator provided, as was for us, in accordance with the council of His will. And, Lucifer was not privy to know the will of the Godhead (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), and God knew in His omniscience what would occur. God knew Lucifer would come to the point he could do nothing but covet what God possessed and enter rebellion. Now, with creation as the apple, that makes me ask who was it that took the first cosmic bite? Though God did not tempt Lucifer to do so, He knew Lucifer would; just as Lucifer knew that Adam would bite too, if deceitfully compelled.

So, why is this subject important? Well, because if there are many today who do not believe in God, there are fewer still that think that Lucifer; e.g., Satan, the Devil, Beelzebub is a derived myth. I am here to tell you that both the I AM and the I WANTED TO BE, are very real, and although I am advancing certain notions of what might have happened at the time of our fall, I do so based on what we know from Scripture and the patterns of behavior of this world’s father. To discuss God’s and Satan’s existence in a narrative such as this is intended to get those who are wise to pause and to think.
