Millpond Ink Musing, 2015 – Of Reflections, Part 2

Lucifer was cast from heaven. However, before this, Lucifer was apparently given authority over what was created here on earth as he is described as the prince of the power of the air. (Eph. 2:2) Thus, Lucifer was allowed by God to tempt Adam; who subsequently fell into sin, separation from God and sentenced to die by following Lucifer’s lead. He tempted Adam by presenting the notion that he could be ‘like’ God if he ate of the fruit of the tree; placed at the center of the garden and Adam’s and Eve’s attention. Some may think the location of the tree was itself a tempt of God, and I’m not surprised by that. To those in Christ, the Word and the Law have always been center and before the eyes of men. As for the world? Their eyes constantly search for the excuses to eat an assortment of forbidden fruit; which although it all tastes like honey, it will sour the stomach and rot the bowels.

The reason that I emphasize the word ‘like’ is because I think that Lucifer believed himself superior to God. He was not like God, and in Lucifer’s mind, while Adam could be ‘like’ God, Lucifer felt himself to be superior to both God and man. How do I know this? I’m just looking at the evidence presented in the Bible. I cannot imagine one third of the heavenly host following Lucifer on a doomed mission. However delusional they were, Lucifer couldn’t have as easily won their allegiance if the outcome of the rebellion was in doubt. In the same manner men will back a Hitler if the prospect of superiority and victory is presented so that all will share in the final gain.

Of course, there is much that we can learn by Lucifer’s interaction with Adam and humanity. And yes, there is the same old; same old in the spiritual battle that rages in the cosmos and is manifest here on earth and in men through certain patterns of behavior and enticements Lucifer uses here on earth. As we look at those patterns of behavior from the glass revealing the base sin of man, we can learn much. What is the base sin? Our pride. Man has always wanted to be either ‘like’ God or God himself. How has man evolved to the point that he believes that he can be God? By denying both God, and of course his true, hidden mentor: Lucifer, who after the cross knew that his doom was sealed.
