We Know He is There

“My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice.” Song 2:9

There is much to be drawn from this passage. As I read it around 3:30 this morning, my heart leapt, even as I suppose that roe or young hart would have, once I found myself embraced by a soul’s passion and its eternal lover. Strange words coming from a former Marine, huh? Anyway…

He stands behind our wall.’ What wall is it? Surely our sin created a wall; blocking our view of Him, but there was something or someone who told us that He stood there. How would we ever know, unless God chose to reveal Himself? The wall also is spacial; meaning that  where God resides in the heavens is a high and lofty place; a place where He inhabits eternity is separate from us. In other places in Scripture, it is said to be a veil or a partition. Again, if God had not chosen to reveal His Son, through His birth, life, death, burial, resurrection and ascension, we would not have known Who was, is and forever stood behind that wall.

‘He looks forth at the windows.’  Some say that our hearts are the windows that He looks forth into, and He knows us better than ourselves. Truly, God’s omniscience; His ability to see all,  and His prescience; or foreknowledge are windows; framed by His very attributes. Indeed, what was framed in accordance with the counsel of His own will and good pleasure allows Him to see, end to beginning. On our side, as we look out by faith; not by sight, we can understand how it is that God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow because in eternity all that is, was, and will be in time converges and for that reason, much of our theology is based on limited thought and earth bound inclination… a Devil’s gravity that enslaves us.

‘Shewing Himself through the lattice.’  Now, that is most interesting word picture: lattice. A lattice is a cross sectional covering of a window. Is it not astonishing to realize that it was too a cross that He showed Himself and to others throughout time? More interesting is the fact that a lattice exists in geometry: “More formally, a lattice can be defined as a discrete subgroup of a finite-dimensional vector space.” (Geometry Junkyard) And who is man but a discrete subgroup of a finite-dimensional vector in God’s created space? Well, suffice it to say, earth is not a junkyard; although some may characterize hell to be, but not for those of us who knows Him Who stands behind the wall, looking forth through the windows and showed Himself to us through a cross laden and sectional (generational) lattice through which we “May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” (Eph. 3:18,19)
