Millpond Ink Musing – To Lift That Shade

“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” 1 Cor. 13:12

Do we know Jesus as dearly as we know the reality of good and evil in our lives? No, of course not. Today, we see only through a glass darkly. However, can you imagine what it will be like to know Christ as deeply and clearly as we know the conflict of good and evil that rages within us? Where it rages in that darkened place; manifesting itself without thinking; and born of selfishness and pride, we act only to satisfy ourselves, even when it hurts others. Where, we are only generous when we have the resources, and there is gain to be made. And where also, we either trample or are trampled. It is a place where our hearts are kept dark to prevent any outside light from flowing in; therein the strong man keeps our peace.

Yes, Adam, we’re victims all and victims made,
But if I stood within your place; with Eve in time.
This poem would bear my name.

Still, can we imagine if we could wean ourselves from that evil that poured from that forbidden fruit? Is that not our call unto sanctification? Is it not, through Christ and His Spirit to cover first our transgressions; then neutralize the poison; thus allowing only God’s goodness to flow? Does not our confession and repentance, and God’s mercy, lift that shade? Yes, I suspect that it is only through the slow death of our flesh and sin; that one day we shall know Him; love Him… See Him in all His goodness and perfections… And be like Him. But until that day, may we ask the Lord to ever and increasingly lift that shade to reveal the filth that settled; yes, even blanketed us in our slumber in the once darkened room of our hearts.
