Millpond Ink Musing, 2015 – Of God’s Word and Hearing

It’s one thing to wonder about the apostasy of Israel and Judah when they repeatedly fell into idolatry and sin. Theirs was an oral history of God’s law that was commanded to be passed down; fathers to children, generation by generation. Consider too how Eve was so easily deceived, when enticed by the Devil. Had she misheard her husband and the commandment that God gave to him? Did, in fact, Adam tell her that God told him not to even touch the fruit; lest they die?

It’s another matter entirely to wonder about the apostasy of the church. Ours is a written history of God’s law and man’s redemption through God’s promised Messiah, Jesus. Over the last fifty years, in excess of 3.9 billion copies of the Bible were purchased; far exceeding the runner up. Despite this, we are still mired in our idolatries; primarily our worship of self, and yes, we wallow in sin.

What does this prove? That God’s Word; whether orally given or in print, is not lacking. It is the truth, and Jesus is the only Way. What this outcome affirms, however, is what Jesus said: that many are called but few are chosen.

Oh, if only ten percent of the 3.9 billion who purchased Bibles were themselves purchased by the blood of Christ! However, I fear that if I was visited as Abraham was by the strangers who were headed towards Sodom and Gomorrah, I would find the number required in order to spare the cities likewise significantly reduced to spare this world.

If only our ears and eyes could temporarily switch locations, then we could see who whispers off to our side and hear what is directly before us!
