May I?

May I ask for your hand?
No, not in marriage, but a quiet walk?
Please don’t speak.
Let the silence cover us,
awaken us to sounds seldom heard –
the wind in the trees,
the distant barking of a dog,
the sound of our hearts, beating.
Sometimes the simplest expression of love
is the holding of hands,
a quiet walk,
and the sound of two beating hearts.
Words are unnecessary,
superfluous, really.
Your smile says it all.
Now, may I?
