Song of Songs – Loved and Loving

Love and Loving

Song of Solomon 2:16

Pastor’s Opening

MY BELOVED,— this is a sweet name which our love takes liberty to apply to the Lord Jesus. His inexpressible beauty has won our affection, and we cannot help loving him whatever may come of it: whether he be ours or not, and whether he smiles upon us or frowns, we love him and cannot do otherwise. We are carried away by the torrent of his goodness, and have no longer the control of our affections. As long as we live we must and will love the altogether lovely One. Yes, he is, and must be to me, “My Beloved.”

Main Theme(s)

This is a short sermon, if one would call it a sermon, which Pastor Spurgeon wrote to his congregation from Mentone, France, December 10, 1881. He spent the winter in Mentone rehabilitating as he had gone there , and will go, for many more years. I can only presume the letter was to be read by one of his elders to his congregation.

Regarding this verse, he made two distinctions for his congregation to consider:

I. BUT THE TEXT IS FREE FROM ALL SUPPOSITION, and

II. YET HAS THE TEXT A NOTE OF CAUTION.
