Millpond Ink Musing – More Than a Caretaker

“The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”

Isaiah 40:8

O Christian! You and I are that grass. You and I are that flower. We too shall wither, our flower will fade, and our body will return to the ground. Many scoffers in the world and in their generation will take note when we pass. Some will take great delight. They issue their decrees: God is dead! Yes, many gardens far and wide appear dead … thorns and nettles occupy what once were lovely places and the people of the street and alleys rejoice! ‘We are finally free of the tyranny of conscience… I can do as I want… no one to judge me! Then they go their way and pitch their tents where sewers give them heat.’

Years… decades… centuries may pass… then suddenly, inexplicably a flower here and there springs into life – full of color and sweet-smelling fragrance. A new generation of back alley sewer dwellers smell something – something unlike anything they ever before smelled. In light of that wonderful, clean scent, they smell their own stench and are ashamed of it. Thus, they follow the cleansing scent to the perimeter of the seemingly dead garden. Looking in, they see light and loveliness.

‘Oh, I never saw anything like this before! Where did these flowers come from?’ Others gathered, and looking at each other, they pinch their noses. ‘How do we get in? O, if there is a Caretaker, then let Him see us! Where have we been? What endless streets and alleys we have wandered! There must be a Caretaker!’

Yes, but more than a Caretaker – a Savior, and His Word has stood forever.
