Millpond Ink Musing – A Day of Reckoning

“…Reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in
Christ Jesus our Lord.” Rom. 6:11

Who do we think we are anyway?

 Answer: exactly.

We are in Christ; possessing His mind and sealed by the Spirit. Given that, who do we reckon (or consider) ourselves to be? If we are our heavenly Father’s children, how do we reckon we are dressed? How do we reckon we will act in His house? Do we think to change to a horse drawn carriage upon arrival there; while riding a snake-pulled cart here? Is that how we reckon it?  To tell you the truth, I lived foolishly for a long time; thinking that God’s grace and the blood of Jesus was sufficient to cover all of my sins; even those I knew I would continue.

Why? Because I neither wanted, nor felt it necessary, to reckon myself dead to sin. I lived a life of cheap grace, as cheap as shoes would be if you turned them over and found the manufacturer intended the bottom of your feet, or flesh, to serve as the purchased soles.

Why? I really didn’t understand…not deeply; spiritually, the gift of grace given, and the agony of the wrath of God poured out upon His Son for my sin. Yes, my sin! And with that image in view—Jesus hanging on the cross; looking at me well into the future… I can reckon myself dead to sin. Now. Today. How could I knowingly, through sin, deliberately heap more coals on a fire that Christ died to extinguish? If I could and did do that, then the question is: Did He extinguish it for me?

I will repent and reckon so.
