Millpond Ink Musing, 2015 – Of Mercy

True mercy covers all sins. While not one sin is forgotten, all are forgiven. The difference is that we; who are the called of Christ, choose not to mention them again after another confesses to us, and we say they are forgiven. To do otherwise would be tantamount to Jesus revoking His own pardon of our sins.

Nonetheless, it would be wonderful if our forgiveness of each other in the flesh could be as the blood of Christ; meaning once and …for all …past, present and future. Of course, you might ask, ‘if that is true, why do we continue to confess our sins to God?’

My answer? For the same reason that a child seeks to emulate his father’s characteristics, and mercy is one such vital attribute. Where the child falls short, he quickly seeks his father’s pardon because he has a tender heart for his father and can barely suffer a frown.

Conversely, a loving father would not abandon his own child for disobeying, especially where the child had an older brother who held fast the father’s love and spoke on his brother’s behalf! Indeed, the love of a father for his child will always remain, though that is not true for the wanderings of a neighbor’s son. Those of a another family; such as exists in the world, follow their own.

Now, returning to the main point, in our Father’s house there is great mercy and those of His household show the same. While the flesh cannot forgive as the Spirit; once and for all, we do so seventy times seven; even as we approach God and confess our sins daily. And why do we do so? We do so because we understood from the day of our adoption that we are only in God’s presence because of His first born; Jesus, our Lord and Savior; big brother. Moreover, we understood the depths and depravity of our sin as we approached Him on the cross. If I believe myself chief of all sinners; as I am, all of whom ask of me to forgive must be the lesser.
