Yes, God is love. And it is with that belief that many think that God cannot be a God of justice, judgment and wrath. Unfortunately, that belief presumes that God loves the creature more than Himself, and He would; if such were possible, impugn or deny His character to allow men to live as they are. Wrong. Besides, He denied Himself once already when He denied His deity, came to earth as a mortal and bore an ignominious death upon a cross. Well, He denied His claim of deity; becoming a human, but He forfeited none of His attributes. He was human, yes, but sinned not. And why? Why did He so condescend? The only possible answer is for His self-love, which was based on the Godhead’s attributes of mercy, goodness and faithfulness to His Word, which we are told was in the beginning.
Indeed, all of God’s attributes must be seen, considered and weighed. However, unlike Belshazzar, if we prayerfully do so then our request will not be found wanting or lacking in any good thing for such is God’s faithfulness to answer. For He is holy. Finally, let us consider: Yes, God is love, but we are also told that He is no respecter of men. There is nothing we can offer Him. How then can we reconcile these two statements? We must embrace the notion of God acting out of His self-love, and casting abroad in our hearts His loving compassion and goodness. As the Sun of Righteousness shares His warmth with us, He is too brilliant and glorious to look directly upon. Would you violate yourself by becoming something lesser and die as a ransom for those who willingly and openly desired to remain captive? That is what the world, without repentance, expects in its definition of God as only a god of love.
