“And if you make Me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone; for if you use your tool on it, you have profaned it.” Exodus 20:25
Most of us have seen a rock wall. I’m not talking about those of masonry; where each brick is the same size and made by human hands. No, the wall I’m talking about is where the builder took rocks of every size and shape, unhewn by human hands and methodically placed into the edifice. Well, if you know what I’m talking about, I’m describing us…the temple of God.
Religions; cults especially, make its edifices of human hands and hewn bricks. Everything about their members; their appearance, conduct, teaching, worship is the same. But the body of Christ; of Whom Jesus is the chief cornerstone; along with the prophets and apostles, is a wonderfully diverse composition of stones of many variations; some boulders; other large, medium and small stones but all precious.
Nonetheless, the Master Builder, the Heavenly Father, picked each, and according to the counsel of His own will, placed us where He willed us to be as part of His holy edifice; yes, for even while we were sinners, Christ died for us. However, those who think they must prepare themselves to be accepted are self-hewn and such thoughts must be abandoned. Others are taught that they must do so and so to prove their selection but such too is a lie.
The beauty of the temple of God in its creation and diversity is that Christ is all and in all. It is His righteousness that seals and preserves us; placed, we are sanctified, and raised up, glorified together in Him. For this reason we should be grateful, and welcoming to one other, and as living stones, bring Christ all glory and honor.
