Charles Haddon Spurgeon preached Christ Crucified about March 14, 1858, at the New Park Street Chapel. Based on 1 Corinthians 1:23-24, “But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness; but unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.” In this wonderful sermon, Pastor Spurgeon explains to us the differences between the Jews and the Greeks during this period, and how the characteristics of them reflected those who sat listening to him that morning.
MY THOUGHT: The characteristics of the Jew and Greek of Paul’s time are still very much alive today, although I tend to believe there are far more Greek. Nevertheless, it is profitable that we should have some insight into those we share our faith with – assuming we share our faith. The Holy Spirit can surely apply our understanding of those (Jewish) religious and (Grecian) philosophical ‘characteristics’ in helping us discern and guide our conversations.
