Charles Haddon Spurgeon preached The Carnal Mind Enmity Against God on April 22, 1855, at the New Park Street Chapel. The sermon, based on Romans 8:7 “The carnal mind is enmity against God,” Pastor Spurgeon begins by telling his congregation, ‘This is a very solemn indictment which the Apostle Paul here prefers against the carnal mind. He declares it to be enmity against God.’ Such is the enmity that exists in the minds of all men – whether or not we acknowledge it.

MY THOUGHT: Enmity is defined as the ‘state or feeling of being actively opposed or hostile to someone or something.’ I prefer the word ‘state’ as the position the majority of the world is in. Quite frankly, most do not believe in a God to actively oppose. Many would say, ‘well, I’m not hostile, I can tell you that.’ Yes, the bottom of muddy ditch may be clearly seen if not stirred up, but that doesn’t mean the mud isn’t there. When the heart, soul, and mind are stirred up, the hostilities of the sinner are fomented, even as the water is muddied.
