In his book, “Gospel Fear,” Jeremiah Burroughs wrote, “Fear fastens the eye.” In this meaning of the word ‘fear’ it is the same we often read in the Scriptures, meaning respect. No one cares to be disrespected. Thus, if you know how it is that we are shown disrespect and apply this quote to the situation, we can learn how to respect others; even as we hope to be shown respect.
How is that? Well, our eyes should be fastened to the speaker; not looking askance. We do so until the conversation is done. Eye contact, definitely. When we read something, if we respect what it is, then our eyes are fastened to the page. This was how Jeremiah applied it to the reading of God’s Word. Our eyes are fixed because we respect both the Author and the message.
Of course, there are negative applications. In the world, all eyes are generally fastened on their gods; that is, what or to whom they are drawn. I needn’t be specific, but consider Job 31:1, “I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?” I think you understand the context and that’s the point: Follow your eyes and watch those around you. There you will find in what they watch what is respected, and hence the travel there as their place of worship.
