THE MOUNTAINS SHALL DROP SWEET WINE
UNFOLDING THIRTY-FOUR
WHERE ARE WE
Cast out, hopeless, but redeemed by the grace of God. Indeed, as all of God’s adopted children – from the day of Adam until today – all were born destitute and cast out as the abandoned children of Adam’s seed.
SCRIPTURE
Amos 9: 13-15
“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt. And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them. And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.”
THE MOUNTAINS SHALL DROP SWEET WINE
UNFOLDING THIRTY-FOUR
Pastor opens,
“The promise (of this title verse) seems to convey the idea of surprising ingathering’s; and I think there is also the idea of amazing rapidity. How quickly the crops succeed each other.”
Pastor presents the sense that there is little time between the ploughing and the harvesting of the fruit.
“Now, mark, here is a promise given of a revival, and when that revival shall be fulfilled this will be one of the signs of it – the marvelous growth in grace of those who are converted.”
Moreover,
“God does not promise that there shall be fruitful crops without labor; but here we find mention made of ploughmen, reapers, treaders of grapes, and sowers of seed; and all these persons are girt with singular energy.”
As for a true revival?
“… is the increased activity of God’s laborers.”
Indeed,
“… everyone is at work – Church of England, Independents, Methodists, and Baptists. There is not a single squadron that is behindhand; they all have their guns ready, and are standing shoulder to shoulder… “
“A time of revival shall be followed by very extraordinary conversion.”
- Not that the mountains shall drop wine, but sweet wine, and
- Or that the hills shall send little streams, but all the hills shall melt.
Indeed, God does say of those converted, ‘if they are willing,’ but He gives an absolute promise of a blessing.
“Divine omnipotence is the doctrine of a revival.”
Moreover,
“The duty of the church is not to be measured by her success. It is as much the minister’s duty to preach the Gospel in adverse times as in propitious seasons.”
To conclude:
“The ploughman shall never be so much esteemed as when he follows after the reaper, and the sower of seed never so much valued as when he comes at the heels of those who tread the grapes.” The glory which God puts upon instrumentality should encourage you to use it.”
THOUGHT GOING FORWARD
O, if only I could aspire more in Christ to see the work of revival performed in me as revival is described here by the Pastor of the body of Christ! Do I even know my role within the body of Christ? Am I aware of what God is doing in the churches around me; not just my own? Am I in step with my many brothers and sisters – many harvests, many vintages? Do I know my duty to perform it in season and out of season? Yes, I want to see revival, but let it start in me, O Lord! In me.
IN TRIBUTE OF SPURGEON’S LOVE OF SHORT RYHMES
In me! O Lord, I cry to do
whatever is Your need!
and let me work well into night
so morning brings your seed.
