Teachings – The Grass Withereth, the Flower Fadeth

THE GRASS WITHERETH, THE FLOWER FADETH

UNFOLDING THIRTY

WHERE WE ARE

Spring in the garden, and spring follows winter. What does that mean in context doctrinally? Kingdom language. We know spring follows winter in nature, but how does that apply to Isaiah 40:8, ‘The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand forever.’ The verse in Isaiah speaks more to what begins in autumn as the grass withers and flowers fade but it isn’t until winter that all is dead to the eye. In winter, the grass is withered, flower faded.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 40: 6-8

“The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”

1 Peter 1: 23-25

“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”

THE GRASS WITHERETH, THE FLOWER FADETH
UNFOLDING THIRTY

Today’s discourse is a short one. Suffice it that I present the opening passage to Pastor’s unfolding for us to read and consider:

“The Spirit blows upon the flesh, and that which seemed vigorous becomes weak, that which was fair to look upon is smitten with decay; the true nature of the flesh is thus discovered, and there is space for the dispensation of the ever-abiding Word, and for the rule of the Great Shepherd, whose words are spirit and life. There is a withering wrought by the Spirit which is the preparation for the sowing and implanting by which salvation is wrought.”

Moreover,

“When our Lord actually appeared, He came into a withered land, whose glories had all departed.”

THOUGHT GOING FORWARD

Yes, there is a withering of man’s dependence upon himself as the Spirit reveals man’s true condition. The grass that withers, the flower that fades… that is you and me. We can say that the Evangel Winter – by depriving us of the newness of spring, and the warmth of summer in our sinful flesh – brings in Evangel autumn, where we see how sin turns our lives, and we know what is coming: winter. Of course, what I am explaining can only happen if it is by the will and working of God’s Holy Spirit to indict… to draw the sinner nigh to the cross of Jesus.

IN TRIBUTE TO SPURGEON’S LOVE OF SHORT RYHMES

The struggle within is the casting off
of the unbroken clods of sin.
As the shoots of life erupt from below –
reach heavenward towards the sun.
