LIKE A WATERED GARDEN, AND LIKE A SPRING OF WATER
UNFOLDING THIRTY-ONE
WHERE WE ARE
As the grass withers of the old nature, and the flower fades during Evangel Autumn, new life will spring anew come Evangel Spring. Thus, it is Evangel Winter, isn’t it, that heralds the death of the old man, and brings the new flower up from under the wintry waste?
SCRIPTURE
Isaiah 58: 11
“And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.”
LIKE A WATERED GARDEN, AND LIKE A SPRING OF WATER
UNFOLDING THIRTY-ONE
“And thou shalt be like a watered garden,”
thus, Pastor began this discourse. While he spoke of pastors who did not tend to their own gardens, and challenged each member of the church to engage their hearts and hands, he asserted –
“Your own soul is to be under cultivation. The heavenly Gardener shall rejoice in your bloom.”
That garden must be watered for the plants to thrive – for us to thrive.
“Christian, as all depends on the watering of the Spirit, so make it a matter of soul concern with thee to be watered continually by God’s grace.”
Go to the Lord and pray – not that you are a garden only, but a watered garden.
“As a spring of water whose waters fail not.”
“Christ Himself has declared that he who drinks of the water of life shall find it in him, ‘a well of water springing up into everlasting life.'”
So, drink. It is a promised, eternal spring, which Pastor points to with regard to our eternal security –
“If I did not believe the doctrine of the final perseverance of the saints, I think I should be of all men the most miserable, because I should lack any ground of comfort.”
Indeed, a great truth and promise!
THOUGHT GOING FORWARD
The promise of Christ’s watering from an everlasting and unending spring gives us great hope and assurance. From the moment the new seed of life formed within us, we have that blessed assurance. As a tree planted in the courtyard of our Great God, or a flower planted in a protected garden, these are the works of God, not of men. “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” John 6:37 Indeed, he will not cast out, but He shall water for He is the living water, the eternal spring.
IN TRIBUTE TO SPURGEON’S LOVE OF SHORT RYHMES
Oh, to drink! To taste! Christ’s living water.
Oh, to kneel at the fount of His love!
