Always and For All Things – Thanksgiving
In the tier (2022) Thanksgiving offering, Pastor Spurgeon based his sermon on Ephesians 5:20: ‘Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.’
I realize that it isn’t easy to find reasons to thank God for all that we have when we don’t have much. I remember as a boy being told to eat my peas and give thanks because there were children in the world who had nothing to eat. Looking back, I appreciate my mother’s coaxing but having sympathy for others is not a motivation for giving thanks to God. I am not heartless. I know what it means to hunger. Still, if I cannot find joy in knowing Christ Jesus, it is unlikely I will give any thanks whatsoever, let alone giving thanks always and for all things (even the peas.) Fortunately, I have such joy today and can give thanks – yes, even for the peas. Of course, I consider that more of a change to my palate. I’ll never like liver, but I do give God thanks that my mother didn’t either.
