This morning, I am working through Charles Haddon Spurgeon’s sermon, “Thoughts on the Last Battle,” based on 1 Corinthians 15:56-57. “The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But, thanks be unto God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Once I’ve gone through it and updated the language, I’ll record it.
Preliminarily, I’ll tell you that the subject of death is not a welcomed guest to anyone’s house. We would much prefer to keep that guest from ever knocking on our door. Of course, the longer we live in our home it is more and more likely that we’ll hear death’s knock. No doubt, if a change of residences and addresses could be made, we would have already lived in a thousand towns to avoid death’s shadow from ever being cast on our threshold. Of course, if you read the Scripture verses that Spurgeon preached on that Sabbath Eve, May 13, 1855, then you know there is hope… victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. The question is, which guest will arrive first. Will Jesus? Oh, if only we hear first the knock of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and bid him to enter. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” (Revelation 3:20)
To my knowledge, there are only two alternative guests offered to you and me regarding our entrance into our post-carnal existence: death and Jesus. I say this regardless of what you may believe will happen after death. That isn’t the issue. Most assuredly, death will one day come to our door… all of us. Whether Jesus ever comes to your door and knocks? I pray he does. And, if he does? Please, open wide that door of your heart.
