“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:” Gen. 1:26
There are times…. glorious times, when in my contemplation of God and His Word, I am enthralled with a simple thought; taken up in rapture as it were with an idea… an idea sparked by His Spirit, which as His command ignited to let there be light, unfolded and expanded as did the universe. Such was my time early this morning as the sun broke ever so slightly on the horizon.
‘Let us make man in our image.’ How often has it been that I’ve read that verse, and despite the presence of the word ‘us,’ I thought mostly of God the Father, and His role in creating Adam; a living soul. However, this morning I stopped to consider more fully the ‘us’ and ‘our’ of God in Adam. Certainly God the Father was present as grand designer, and the One Whom from eternity planned what came into existence out of nothing during that week of days. I also readily grasped the role of the Spirit… as we read earlier in Genesis as He moved upon the face of the waters. Although unsaid, I imagine the Spirit gave the breath of life that filled Adam’s lungs, expanding first his chest; oxygen carried by his blood to reach and open his eyes; then inflate into a physical stretch of his arms and legs… all extremities nourished and extended; blood and oxygen coursing through his veins.
However, what of the Son? Jesus? Was He present in essence only; a mere and passive on-looker; awaiting His time in history or did He actively participate in Adam’s form? Was the humanity of Christ from all eternity; the One Who ascended to stand at the right hand of the Father Today, the physical form and model for Adam Yesterday at the time of his creation? Is He not the same yesterday, today and tomorrow? The Alpha and Omega? What do we take that to mean? Truth, substance only or His entirety from lasting to everlasting? We know from the Bible that Jesus existed before creation; compare Genesis 1:1 to John 1:1. Time itself is a created element, and we know that God inhabits eternity, and Christ in Him. Unlike Adam, who was created from dust, and to dust returned; Jesus is God; of heaven and from heaven He came and thus returned. All of this is too marvelous to imagine, but imagine we may because God provided to us in the richness of His Word collective verses as portals, spread across sixty-six books… an open invitation to pray and to explore His wonders and might if only you open His Book.
If our treasure is indeed in heaven, then that is where our heart and hunt will be!
