Over the years, I’ve heard testimonies where people actually seemed to be competing over who committed the worst sin. I never understood that, but I suppose, people are different. One man would say that he committed adultery; the next said he did twice and abandoned both the women with his sons. Another man said that he ran afoul of a chicken when he was high on drugs. Everyone laughed. However, no one seemed to be ashamed, and yet they… said they were all humbled before God. However, before men? It was just good humor. Interesting. Thankfully, no one was brazen enough to call it holy laughter.
While I took certain liberties with my storytelling above, at times it seemed that testimonies I’ve heard went as badly as what I told. I once took part. Yes, our pride can go so far as to even become sin smitten; where God in His Holiness is diminished as we raise ourselves. We say it’s exalting God by declaring our greatest and most heinous sins! Why? We then explain it is to declare his wonderful grace and mercy! Really? I wonder; especially after we give our testimonies, and return to the streets.
Oh, God, forgive us our sin smitten confessions. There is no glory in the filth we venture and there are things we ought not blatantly confess in public. Let our humility be shown through our love of You and others and let us smile when we’re asked why it is we are people after God’s own heart.
