Millpond Ink Musing, 2015 – Of True Wisdom and Nit Wits

An excerpt from ‘Gospel Fear,’ Jeremiah Burroughs, “When people apprehend a minister preaching only with his wit and his gifts, the heart of a man will condemn it. It may commend the man, but condemn the word, for it has no power over the conscience; but when a minister of God comes in God’s name and preaches in the demonstration of the Spirit, then he preaches with power, such power as prevails with the consciences of men: the demonstration of the Spirit and of power.”

Yes, there are many today who preach from their own wit and gifts and while they may cause the hearer’s lips to form a smile and to reach for their purse, their hearts remain as flint; if only to be struck by the Spirit and in power and ignited in love for God!

The distance between a man’s purse and his heart is as far apart as heaven and hell.
