The hypocrite is one who will do only so much that it will save him. Unlike the formalist, who honors only for personal gain; without pain, the hypocrite will inquire; as the young rich man, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? Thus, they appear willing to do all to avoid hell but will stop short. It is where the line is drawn that reveals outwardly the hypocrisy of men. Some keep it closely held and thus, go unobserved; others… loosely. It was only the penetrating eye of Jesus that saw the inside of the cup. Nevertheless…
They seek, in their own mind, the least measure of grace and faith needed to be saved and that based on works. Theirs is not a heart that is humbled so that they seek to give all in recognition of Christ’s purchase. No, the hypocrite sets the price of heaven, but forgive the pun, they will have hell to pay for doing so.
