If we were truthful, we would have to admit that the terrible sorrows that we feel are often the consequence of our own sinful actions. That is, we would say that if we were altogether truthful and wanted to end the conduct that brought us our sorrow.
However, one sin usually seeks refuge among its own, and in this case, we will lie to ourselves; even if we believed with all our heart that we had been honest! You see, man, in his fallen nature, will continue to draw from the same well that poisoned him to begin with. Oh, that’s not to say we aren’t trying or wanting to be honest, but then again, if we dredged deeper we would find in our seeming truthfulness a deceptive and selfish end. We were only looking to end our sorrow; not the pleasure of the sin that brought us there.
Now, if we want honesty in its purest, we need to change wells and draw from the deep and ever flowing waters of God’s grace and mercy. If we want truth and reconciliation; we must repent and by faith alone accept the ransom Christ paid for all our sins. Then, and only then, will we draw through His Spirit from a heavenly fountain.
There, your tears will well up in joy and earthly sorrows will no longer reign over you as a mist arising from a filthy pool.
