I suppose that men who are by nature meek and submissive to others would look for approval; especially within the church. Meekness there is supposedly extolled and virtuous; approved and accepted; if not adored! That is not true outside, in a dog eat dog world where only the strong and lusty survive. Certain ‘fruit’ that are ‘godly’ but acquired naturally have no place in a sinner’s den. However, they… don’t have any place in the church either; not unless those qualities are supernaturally changed, empowered and presented for the building up of the body of Christ.
The problem is that whatever comes by nature is by nature sinful and often sinfully applied. Often, it serves our pride; to acquire applause, recognition and power within a body that values our gifts. Qualities; such as our natural propensities towards meekness, kindness, gentleness and patience are warmly embraced and coveted in church, but are they of the Spirit?
Sometimes it is easier to identify the true gifts of the Spirit that spring up from a formerly poisonous well; rather than drinkable. What is drinkable is not necessarily pure, and what was not evident in the formerly poisonous is found miraculously present in the new.
