God is love. For God so loved… And because of that, we’re shown a more excellent way! Love. Charity. Holding others in a higher regard than ourselves. Seeking not for our own but denying ourselves; even as Jesus denied His deity and condescended to become the Son of Man. As He lay in that manger, who could imagine that newborn child’s heavenly throne inhabited eternity? There, His Heavenly Father sat, smiling, as the angels sang out, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy!’ Who could have known that the angels proclaimed the Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. What did that heavenly host think later when they saw their God as Jesus lay in that lowly manger? Surely, they were filled with awe! Indeed, no greater love hath any man than he who laid down his life for others; first, Jesus laid down His deity to lay in that manger, later He would lay down His life on that Old Rugged Cross.
Indeed, many men and women have followed Jesus in the giving of their lives for their loved ones. We thank them. We remember them. Were all saved who died? Oh how I pray that is true, but no man can say. That’s for Jesus to say – the first born fruit of God’s love and our redemption. However, because I believe that all of those who passed away appeared before Jesus, I wonder what they would say to the living today.
Don’t dwell on us too long, we’re gone.
Though, your thoughts of us are sweet,
But quickly turn your eyes to Him,
For all we did was purchase time,
For you to turn from sin.
