It is only because of God’s gracious assurance of Christ abiding in us that we are able to stand. Otherwise, we would surely and finally fall as the war rages daily in and around us. Have you not read where it was written that heaven suffers violence and the violent take it by force? If so, why the surprise?
Inwardly, the battles of the flesh lusting against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh is a violent and spiritual tug of war. Ground is lost on some days; gains the next. Yet, it is the Father’s hands over ours that clasps the rope, and in that, He is our Fortress and Stronghold.
Without, there is also a tumult where family, friends, neighbors and coworkers may oppose and pull against us; often unknowingly. Other times? Oh, they know. We can see their grimace and they will grit their teeth as they dig in their heels. But all they have on their side of the divide is hard pack. We watch them slide as there is no aid to their footing. It is a smooth and slick surface that carries many to perdition. Their hearts are as stone.
No, they do not have the ground where we stand and plant our feet. We dig in and the softened ground of our resident Savior’s heart and love secures us; building high an impenetrable wall, which tells us all of heaven would have to be pulled across that divide before we reached its edge.
My friends, if this is true for you, let me say our daily gains and losses are far from the edge; though they appear closer within our hearts and minds. And, this view is necessary for our good; even our sanctification and glorification. However, we can rejoice and press on because we know any final loss will simply not happen. It won’t; not because of our strength or works, but because of His gracious assurance that softens our hearts with His tears and there is no other grip as mighty as is found in His hands.
