Millpond Ink Musing, 2015 – Of Christ’s Provision and The Affects on Men

The Reverend Thomas Shepard, in his book entitled, ‘The Sincere Convert and Sound Believer,’ wrote of Christ: “He is the Savior of all men. That is, not a Savior of eternal preservation out of hell, but a Savior of temporal reservation from dropping into hell.”

What does this mean? It means if God had not provided men a way of redemption; then He would have executed His wrath immediately on all men because all men fell short of His glory and there was no salvation. Why would He tarry given the nature of our offense?

However, because He provided us His only begotten Son, Jesus provided all men a temporary reprieve; giving each of us a space of time to repent. Of course, not all will believe and be spared. In that regard, Jesus did not die for all men; though the lives of all men were potentially lengthened depending upon God’s will and end.
