In 1 Peter 1:2, we read, “May grace and peace be multiplied to you.” Why is this necessary? Why was it Peter’s prayer that grace and peace be multiplied? If we had enough faith at the first when we came to repent and to trust in Jesus, wasn’t that sufficient? Once saved, always; right?
We should probably back up to what Peter wrote just before his petition. He wrote, “…for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with His blood.” You see, his supplication for our increase in grace and peace was for our continued obedience, and Peter knew we would face increasing accompanying trials and afflictions! If you are truly in Christ, then you should know that your life didn’t stop on the day that you knelt, only to rise up and continue a sinful course. As on the day that Israel entered the promised land, they were told in advance what to expect, but if God is for you who can stand against?
As for the sprinkling of Christ’s blood that Peter mentioned? Consider it our spiritual shower where we wash ourselves daily through Christ our High Priest and advocate through continued repentance and forgiveness. This is not the repentance that led to our initial regeneration and coming to our Father through His Son, but it is our daily washing so that we can boldly and confidently approach God and make our supplications. Would you approach your employer filthy? How much more so a holy and perfect Father who adopted us?
Finally, and backing up one more line to the beginning of verse 1, how was all this to come about? “According to the foreknowledge of God the Father.” For the sincere believer, this is our greatest comfort and assurance that God will meet all of our needs. He knew what was necessary from the start! And knowing that by faith, He will multiply our grace and peace today for those living in obedience to His Son and who, through Christ’s intercession, showered this morning.
