Jesus said if you love me keep my commandments. John 14:15 Please do me a favor and ask me how it is that I came to know Jesus before opining on my insistence that I keep the law. Please?
Why? Because if you asked, then I would tell you that it was by faith alone in Him and His righteousness that I am saved. My subsequent keeping of the law is my reasonable service to Him; unto sanctification and mortification of sin in the flesh.
Left unasked, some would judge me and erroneously conclude, by my words and actions, that I am legalistic; intending only to earn salvation. To that opinion, I again will say, no, my desire to obey Him, and the strength to do so, follows only that while I was a sinner, Christ died for me. Believing that, it is not I who live but Christ. And if Christ, I am called to be holy unto the law.
Please, we must be wary when we think of others as legalistic or fundamental. Such thinking is often a misguided defense to spurn those who truly delight in God’s law so the naysayer can pursue a life of ungodliness. Ask the brother or sister: what is the hope that is within you? If the answer is Jesus and His blood? That person’s respect and doing of the Law is love towards God.
