“And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” Rev. 13:8
Embedded in this passage, we again find a sense of timelessness to the Bible that is spread throughout God’s Word as is His heavenly creation. And even as the stars and universe are ever expanding Today, we find through His Spirit our knowledge of Him reaching heavenward; such was promised in the Scriptures related to the latter day and the dissemination of knowledge through His Spirit in preparation for the hour. Here, in this passage, we have a reference to the Lamb that was slain that is set against a day yet to come. However, when was this that it was said the Lamb was slain? From the foundation of the world. Really? I thought He was slain… what? Two thousand years ago? Well, yes, that was Today actual; realized in our timeline, but here its mention is in God’s timeline, which isn’t really a timeline at all because God inhabits eternity. Time is as much a creation as is your watch. That’s why I have begun to capitalize ‘Today,’ in my posts, to remind readers of the eternal setting of a clock and calendar set on Today.
When I said this sense of timelessness is spread throughout the Bible, consider Genesis 1:1. We all think that Genesis is the first book, which tells us ‘In the Beginning, God…’ Well, it is in the sense of our timeline and history. However, if we turn to the Gospel of John, it begins ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.’ Hmmm. Interesting, huh? Jesus, the Word, preceded creation. He also preceded us in our own birth. Otherwise, how could it be said, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” While we were yet sinners? I wasn’t even born! Goodness…
You know, in a certain respect I think God has used science fiction movies to help us expand our imagination of what is out there; many sources of the Bible pointed to the heavens of God’s handiwork and design. Last Wednesday at Bible study, the teacher brought up the existence of black holes, and how they represented dying stars, collapsing into themselves. I asked the teacher whether he thought the existence of a black hole was evidence of the death that came to all creation as the result of man’s sin. After all, if we believe the Bible, all creation is under the sentence of death as a result of Adam’s sin. The teacher said that he had to think about that. Nonetheless…
We can also throw into discussion Psalms 2:7, “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.” This was written by King David when? How many years earlier in our timeline before the angels announced joyously the birth of a child; lying in a manger? 1,000 years? Wow. In Psalms 95:7, it is written, “For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice:” Now, here’s a timeless statement and a personal call that affects Today not only in our timeline, but also in the eternal. In Luke 4:21, our Lord announced fulfilling a prophecy made by Isaiah, “And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”As for God knowing us too before the foundation of the earth was laid, the Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 1:3,4 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.” Anyway…
The Bible is replete with such references; some that I have shared before. The reason I keep harping on this subject is that it is a wonderful, mysterious and glorious tune to be played, and it’s meant to be played Today.
