SIT DOWN, REST and LOOK!

In the writing of LOOK!

… little did Pastor Spurgeon know for certain, though I believe he knew, that he would not return to London from Mentone, France. Earlier that year, he preached a sermon that seemed to indicate that he didn’t believe his days on earth would continue much longer. On May 17, 1891, he preached ‘My Times are in Thy Hand.’ He went to Mentone, France that autumn – as he had for the past 20 years – to rehabilitate from his struggles with gout and a kidney disorder, but he died there, January 31, 1892.

As for the order of the sermons presented, I rearranged them to provide a story about his life, salvation and its ending with his sermon entitled, ‘Hand of God in the History of a Man,’ which many considered autobiographical. May our Lord Jesus richly bless those who listen to our LOOK! series and find their rest.

REST – Hebrews 4:3

For we who have believed enter the rest, in keeping with what he has said, “So I swore in my anger. “They will not enter my rest,” even though his works have been finished since the foundation of the world. (CSB)

SOVEREIGNTY and SALVATION – Isaiah 45:22

“Look to Me, and be saved,
All you ends of the earth!
For I am God, and there is no other. (NKJV)

CONCERNING PRAYER – Psalms 86:6-7

“LORD, hear my prayer; listen to my cries for mercy. I call on you in the day of my distress, for you will answer me.” (CSB)

PROVIDENCE – Matthew 10:30

“But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” (NJKV)

SYCHAR’S SINNER SAVED – John 4:10

Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would ask him, and he would give you living water.” (CSB)

SPICES, FLOWERS, LILIES and MYRRH – Song of Solomon 5:13

“His cheeks are like beds of spice,
mounds of perfume.
His lips are lilies,
dripping with flowing myrrh.” (CSB)

SPIRITUAL LIBERTY – 2 Corinthians 3:17

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” (KJV)

CONSOLATION PROPORTIONATE TO SPIRITUAL SUFFERINGS – 2 Corinthians 1:5

“For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.” (KJV)

MY TIMES ARE IN THY HAND – Psalms 31:15

“My times are in Your hand;
Deliver me from the hand of my enemies,
And from those who persecute me.” (NJKV)

HARVEST TIME – 1 Samuel 12:17

Is today not the wheat harvest? I will call to the LORD, and He will send thunder and rain, that you may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking a king for yourselves.”

HAND OF GOD IN THE HISTORY OF A MAN – Job 7:1

Is there not a time of hard service for man on earth?
Are not his days also like the days of a hired man? (NKJV)
