Heritage Crossing–Chapter 13 Snippet

Authors Notation: Richard has decided to ask David if he wanted to go on the trip and talks to him while David climbed a maple in the back yard. The conversation turns to another young boy that climbed the trees of Barhamsted: John Brown of Harpers Ferry.

Richard still had a lot to do before they left the house the next day on their trip. As for the game ‘Who Are You? It wasn’t complete. It was missing a couple of pieces that he would need only if he sold it. David and Prudy could still play the game with his help and the ancestor data he had on his computer. Richard decided to build a tree that would go back to the arrival of his ancestors to the New World—back 12, 13 generations to the arrival of the Mayflower and Plymouth Colony. As for the township lists, those were done and printed. Each list provided the name and the number of how many generations passed since the ancestor lived in New England. For Richard, reading their names was his tribute and a way to bring them back to life as happened with Zachariah Field years earlier in his study.

Richard was excited but also nervous. He knew that David and Prudy didn’t know what he was planning. As far as he knew, they expected him to stay there, and he’d watch them until Rebecca came and got them. He had such a mish-mash of feelings. He didn’t know if the kids would be excited or bored with the prospect of visiting First Encounter Beach in Eastham, Massachusetts, and the Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth. He thought about going to Charley’s and what Charley planned to do. That should be fun. As for the rest of the trip? He didn’t know if he could pull it off alone. Helen had always been the glue that held the family together.
