“Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.” 2 Kings 22:19
In 2 Kings 22, we read the story of King Josiah, who came after a succession of evil kings (Ahaz, Manasseh and Amon), and desired to restore true worship of God in Judah. In fact, the Law of God had been missing from the land eighty years. Anyway, he had the Law read before the people and there was a revival. The interesting thing was, however, in verse 16, we learn that God was still going to bring great calamity to the people for the sins of the past. While Josiah would not himself suffer the events that were about to occur because of his tender heart and humility (v. 19), this revival would not forestall the events set into motion by their sin.
Fast forward to the 21st century. Even if America were to experience true revival today by rediscovering and applying God’s Word, we must know, and I say we’re seeing, the realization of the calamitous events as spoken of God through Jesus and the prophets related to the latter days. Whether what is happening today is a foreshadowing of the final chapter in man’s history, or the final, I will not venture. However, I can urge my fellow men to pick up God’s Word and read. Who knows? Maybe you, as King Josiah, will be found with a tender and humble heart and be spared. Unfortunately, that will not forestall God’s concluding His plan; although for you, it may be your escape.
