Why does man have a conscience if he is able to keep what he had done hidden? If there is no God to answer to, who will know? What is its purpose? We cannot say that we acquired it as a matter of law or social influence because we knew guilt as children; before the age of accountability. When we were corrected, we felt shame and cried out for forgiveness.
No, I say that our conscience is the alarm clock of our soul; given in concert with Adam’s bite of the apple; thus, all humanity acquired the knowledge of good and evil. As Adam and Eve experienced, we too see our nakedness, and like them, we seek our own cover. While our conscience rings out to awaken us to arise and turn to our heavenly Father for forgiveness, we deny God even exists and will repeatedly hit the snooze button. We reject His Son, and His blood covering of our transgressions. Yes, and how softly and quietly the Devil will assist us to keep us in our sleep. We will continue to do so until the sound of the alarm grows dim, and later, turn off.
However, more than an alarm, the conscience is a devise that will, as a court reporter, record all that we do; all that transpired during our sleep. It’s purpose? It will be played back at judgment when all shall be compelled to arise and to give an account. For each snooze alarm pressed and logged, this record will stand as the evidence of our guilt and God’s righteous justice.
“Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.” 1 Thess. 5:6
