“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Cor. 5:17
I looked for this verse this morning because I was teased with the notion of who I am; now that I am an adopted son of the I AM. Of course, I have known that as a new creature in Christ that the life that I led passed away. Once dead in sin (Eph. 2:5), sin has now died the death of the old man; though in my flesh a headless chicken still thinks it is alive and searches for its former head (Rom. 6:11,12) causing me to stumble. Nonetheless, “…if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.” (Rom. 8:10) Hallelujah, I am made new; redeemed by the blood of the Lamb and set apart to be holy… justified and made righteous in Christ! Though I stumble, yet it is Christ Who catches me. Though I fall, He lifts me up. Amen?
Of course, what has happened to us was not just inwardly. I am also a new creature by appearance. That doesn’t mean God has changed my physicality. I still have what some family members have told me is a large nose. No, what it means is that what people observe of me is new as the Holy Spirit goes about His house cleaning; which is unto the mortification of sin (sinning less) and my sanctification (becoming more holy.) This happens as the Spirit works in me to will and to do God’s will and pleasure. Am I not a living temple? Yes, so folks should observe a new creature in my behavior as my appetite for the ‘sin sweets’ of this world lessen and I find increased daily refreshment in my walk with Jesus. We should find His sweetness ever within and welling up to over-flowing… our affections gushing as I’ve seen in what Sister Hicks Debbi (a FB friend) writes so often in her postings. I suppose some are put off by her seemingly excessive praises; her use of various punctuation marks: ellipses, exclamation points, brackets… you name it, she uses it all to communicate her love of the Lord! However, I’ve concluded sadly that many of us are as dry and shallow wells; those who need through prayer and supplication to ask the Spirit to prime their hearts so that the blood of Christ will begin to pump more vigorously and course through our veins as it did when we called Jesus our first love. We need to dig deeper into God’s Word, in fellowship; through prayer, confess our sins one to another, if we are ever to see an additional drop of God’s living water brought to surface in us.
Finally, as a new creature, we know that we are not citizens of this world. We are the living evidence of a new creation… a new heaven and earth… each of us individually fitted into the body of Christ. “In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.” (Eph. 2:21,22) In this we should all praise God, and be thankful… to glorify God with cymbals, and as Sister Hicks Debbi, in symbols… :-)))))) !!!!! all in love and adoration; singing in a heavenly chorus.
